CAPITOL HILL REPORT
A Victory for Religious Liberty May 10, 2019
Last week, on the National Day of Prayer, President Donald Trump unveiled the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service’s (HHS) conscience rules. President Trump initiated the creation of this guidance in his May 2017 Executive Order establishing a White House Faith and Opportunity Initiative responsible for providing recommendations to the Administration’s policy agenda pertaining to religious liberty.
The new regulation ensures that healthcare patients and professionals, like nurses, pharmacists, and doctors, are protected from discrimination in their workplace based on the exercise of their religious beliefs or moral convictions. For example, this guidance allows employers or healthcare facilities to decline from participating in abortions, administering birth control, or performing assisted suicide. This last fiscal year HHS’s office of civil rights received 343 complaints. This is a much larger number than ever reported in the Obama administration and shows the need for conscience protections as an increasing number of Americans feel comfortable reporting violations to an Administration that supports religious freedom.
The rule also provides HHS the full force of the law to take action against a conscience rights violation. Some of these tools include the ability to investigate complaints, withhold federal funds, and make referrals to the Department of Justice. Protecting conscience rights is fundamental in guaranteeing the First Amendment. Eagle Forum applauds the Trump administration in implementing these conscience protections and standing up for religious freedom.

UNPLANNED tells Abby’s story from a former Planned Parenthood abortion clinic manager and “employee of the year” to becoming a national pro-life leader! The movie shows her two abortions, but by the grace of God and the prayers of 40 Days for Life participants, Abby had a change of heart and is now a pro-life leader, especially helping other abortion workers leave the abortion industry. Many 40 Days for Life cities will host a premier showing the night before on Thursday, March 28th. Find a theater near you at this link. The movie is R rated due to the violence of abortion. No one under 17 is admitted without a parent, yet teens can get an abortion here in CA without their parents even knowing. Here are two reviews that discuss why the movie received an R rating: ACLJ article and a comparison with other popular movies.
As one of the youngest Planned Parenthood clinic directors in the nation, Abby Johnson was involved in upwards of 22,000 abortions and counseled countless women on their reproductive choices. Her passion surrounding a woman’s right to choose led her to become a spokesperson for Planned Parenthood, fighting to enact legislation for the cause she so deeply believed in. Until the day she saw something that changed everything….
Napa California- Former Planned Parenthood manager and current 40 Days for Life Director of Outreach Sue Thayer shared her story of transformation in Napa, California on March 4, 2019. at the Napa 40 Days for Life Rally Event, at Kolbe-Trinity Prep School located at 2055 Redwood Road Napa CA 94558.
“40 Days for Life volunteers in Napa and around the world have worked tirelessly for the cause of life. We know that prayers in front of an abortion facility save lives and change hearts. Around the world, we’ve seen expectant moms turn away from abortion facilities and choose life for their babies,” Thayer said. “Abortion workers like me are walking out of their jobs, and facilities are closing their doors forever. What a privilege to join the local 40 Days for Life volunteers!”
“We are very excited that Sue will be here to support and inspire our local 40 Days for Life effort,” said Howard Haupt spokesperson for the local Napa CA. 40 Days for Life campaign. “She speaks with transparency and passion, and her message will motivate the crowd. We are so honored that she would be able to be present for our 2019 Kickoff Rally”
We wanted to share some pictures of this event with you all….
